Introduction

For this blog, I combined two of my favorite things - teaching and movies. What movies inspired you to become a teacher? What movies accurately portray schools and the life of a teacher? What movies do you use in the classroom? Why?

  1. The movie that inspired me the most is "Stand and Deliver." Edward James Olmos does a great job portraying a math teacher who refuses to believe that his students cannot learn calculus.

  2. I taught ESL for two years and part of my job was to train the teachers in the district on how to work with students who do not speak English fluently. One time I did a presentation on "culturally responsive practices." During the presentation I stood up in front of the teachers and began teaching them a lesson in Spanish. I spoke nothing but Spanish. I did not use picture cues, I was not animated, nothing. I then proceeded to yell at the teachers who were not catching on, in Spanish. (I really laid it on to this one lady who is constantly yelling at one of my ESL students.) I then began to use strategies that would help the students. It was an eye opening experience for many of the teachers.

During my culturally responsive lecture I went on to talk about social norms. I love to use the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" to talk about social norms. I especially love the scene where Ian brings his parents over to Tula's parents house to meet her parents for a "quiet dinner."

  3. A popular movie that centered around rural schooling and life lessons that had a big impact on me growing up would have to be Hoosiers. Great story, great period piece and loosely based on a rural school that really won the Indiana State High School basketball championship. Also, Dead Poets Society was a solid film around schooling and I even learned a few things about poetry. It was yet another period piece that came with some life lessons and had a solid cast to boot.

  4. A movie I can relate to my experience in CMSD is Freedom Writers. It seemed somewhat realistic to me at least.
No movie inspired me to become a teacher, my former teachers did - I wanted to become the teacher that I never had.
I have used movie clips from Dead Poets Society, not recently though.... and Champions of Faith in my PSR class which connects faith with sports.

  5. I like the movie The Ron Clark Story. I met Ron Clark in person and the movie does not do him justice, he is much more witty and funny in person...no he has a zany personality that the movie did not capture. I showed this movie to my students and we then did a character map and compared and contrasted the student to a character in the movie. The students really enjoyed it!
